I am a sophomore at the University of Nebraska and am doing a research
paper on the above stated question. My paper is mainly aimed at African/American
teens. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Whether it being
the name of a good book on this subject or your own personal experience
or that of one of a family members. Thanks so much!
are you a young woman of color who is between the ages of 14-25 and sick of being misrepresented or left out of contemporary literature? if you are then listen up! my name is wendy thompson and i am currently putting together a book about/for/by young women of color that covers the many issues we struggle with on a daily basis. this book will be a vehicle through which you and your personal experience(s) are described and made real. the reasons behind doing this...we as women of color have been stereotyped and ignored, our images distorted, i felt it was about time women of color spoke out for this new millennium and in this book, we all have that opportunity to speak for ourselves. a little about me: i grew up in oakland, ca. a very diverse city where i was surrounded by drugs, violence, and deterioration. my parents didn't want me to end up pregnant or in a gang so they moved out with me at 15 and even though i hated it [living in suburbia] at the time, that move probably prevented me from being a statistic today. so im in college now and i've been wanting to put out a publication in which young women of color have an opportunity to step outside of the margins. this book will hopefully address issues of racism, sexism, violence, and personal struggle [rape, teen pregnancy, gangs] as well as victory [activism, art, and empowerment]. so what do you think? i am currently being sponsored by a san francisco based organization called WILD which specializes in human rights education. as of now, we are in the beginning stages of putting this all together but submissions are EXTREMELY welcome. i am looking for 1-10 page personal essays, journal entries, short autobios, photographs, art, and all other forms of self expression out there! some topics to cover include: identity - culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation violence - rape/sexual violation, abuse, gangs, incarceration, street survival sex & reproduction - pregnancy, abortion, sex work, being a mother, virginity expression - dance, music, art, writing, deejaying, sports activism - feminism, breaking stereotypes, mainstream culture, privilege, racism
please feel free to expand since there is no limit to what we have gone through. one thing i would like to note is that the set deadline is september 1. submissions sent in earlier will be given special attention. please remember to include name [or alias], age, and location as well as a return address where i can contact you. i am looking forward to working with all of you.

My name is Sarah Wallace and I am conducting a research project for an independent study about the biracial experience of adolescents. I am a senior Psychology major at Fisk University (in Nashville, TN) and am being advised by Dr. Sheila Peters. I am requesting at least 40 African- American/Caucasian Biracial adolescents, between the ages of 15-19, to answer approximately thirty questions pertaining to race, self-esteem, and experiences growing up. If you are interested in participating in this research that would take up to 15 minutes of your time, please email me at Sarahwallace@hotmail.com. This is a confidential study. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Dr. Peters (speters@dubois.fisk.edu) or myself. Thanks.
