'Neither Black Nor White', Lisa Jones Townsel, Ebony, November 1996, Vol. LII, No. 1, pp. 44-50. Discusses the pros and cons of placing a multiracial category on the 2000 census.

When We Talk About American Ethnic Groups, What Do We Mean?, Jean S. Phinney, American Psychologist, September 1996, Vol. 51, No. 9, pp. 918-925. In addition to other things, this scholarly article suggests that there is a high correlation between one's evaluation of his or her group membership and self esteem.
